Competition Objective

The objective is to provide the opportunity for students and community members to demonstrate their creative and cultural talents in music and speech. To encourage the students and community members to study and perform works by diverse Poets and Composers. To enhance the teaching and learning of multicultural education and to promote cultural interest as a lifelong interest.

Round 1 & 2: February

Category 1

Jazz Bands: Open to High School Students

Bands will perform two pieces of their own choice by an African American Composer.

Judging will be based on: Stage presentation, quality of performance, teamwork interpretation and improvisation.

Grand Prize for 1st Place

• GBMRC Cash Award
• People’s United Bank Challenge Trophy

Category 2

Poetry Out Loud: Open to Elementary, Middle and High School Students, 2 entries per school

1st and 2nd Rounds

Students shall perform Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise”.

Final Round

Students shall perform Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” and Langston Hughes’ “A Dream Deferred”.

Judging will be based on: Stage Presentation (including dress, body language, eye contact, articulation and diction).

Grand Prize for 1st Place

• 1 week stay in Jamaica: airfare and hotel for winner
• Fletcher Free Library Challenge Trophy

Category 3

Poetry Out Loud: Open to Adults and College Students

1st and 2nd Rounds

There is a $10.00 entry fee for this category.

Entrants will perform Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” from memory.

Final Round

Entrants will perform “Still I Rise” and one piece of own choice.

Judging will be based on: Stage Presentation, (including dress, body language, eye contact, articulation, diction and interpretation.

Grand Prize

• 1 week stay in Jamaica: airfare and hotel for winner
• United Way of Northwest Vermont Challenge Trophy

Category 4

Public speaking: Open to all Vermont Students and Community Members

There is a $10.00 entry fee for this category.

Judging will be based on: Stage presentation (including dress, body language, tone, eye contact, energy and enthusiasm), topic clearly defined and developed, clear and concise oral delivery, articulation and diction.

1st and 2nd Rounds

Max time: 5 minutes. Please choose one of the following:

Please describe the role of community leaders and parents in helping to create a sustainable Multicultural learning environment in our Schools and Colleges.

Please describe a strategy or strategies for recruiting, hiring and retention of teachers or Police Officers from Diverse Cultural backgrounds as an effort to help create 21st Century Policing and Schools in Vermont.

Final Round

Max time: 5 minutes. Please address the topic of either: “Diversity in the Community” or “Diversity in the Workplace”.

Grand Prize

• 1 week stay in Jamaica airfare and hotel for winner
• KeyBank Challenge Trophy
